We never know what the Lord will do with His word. It is powerful, living and active and just as the rain falls and waters the earth and brings life - so is God's word. It will go out and not return to Him empty but will accomplish the purpose for which He sent it.

The desire to combine Bible verses with art began at Capernwray Bible school in England in the early 1990's where a brilliant artist, Anna Behnam and her husband Tim were also in residence at the time.  Anna created some marvellous art, which interweaved Scripture into beautiful designs. Anna's art and style were inspirational for me and what has become BibleArt.co.uk

The Bible says no ear has heard, no eye has seen and no mind can even imagine the things God has prepared for those who love Him (1 Corinthians 2:9). How then can we paint anything of spiritual value such as joy, light, life, hope, love, wisdom, truth, life eternal, and Heavenly things?

I remember standing on my driveway looking up into a huge expanse of sky as I watched what looked like brush strokes of blues, reds, oranges, yellows and purples painting a beautiful sunset. I felt like a little child watching with awe, wonder and amazement as a live painting was happening before my eyes on the canvas of God's sky.

That experience changed how I saw creation. Plants, animals, landscapes, rivers, seas and stars became living, moving colours and shapes within the 'live' painting of creation held together by His power.

But I never used to think that way.  I used think that the universe was a cosmic accident that had somehow exploded into existence from nothing. Below is a brief summary of my journey from atheist/agnostic to follower of Jesus Christ to help give some insight to my approach to art.

This is God's creation and we have a purpose in it. He invites us: to use our minds - to use reason, logic and common sense:  'Come let us reason together'.  I considered:

The evidence of the Creator's fingerprints all over the universe -

        • time itself had a beginning
        • the universe with all its power had a beginning in time
        • it has its own language (mathematics) - resting upon the laws of logic
        • it has its own laws  (gravity, nuclear strong force, nuclear weak force, electromagnetism) all throughout the universe.
        • it is incredibly finely tuned to support life

The evidence of the Creator's fingerprints in all living things:

        • The origin of life and the breath of life
        • the origin of the information in the DNA code in every living thing.

The Creator's fingerprints are evident in human beings:

        • our incredible creative abilities including music, art, language,
        • our ability to think in abstract terms and invent and theorise,
        • our inner conscience - quite apart from any animal instinct
        • our inner search for deeper meaning, purpose and the divine

When I considered the above and read the words of Jesus in a New Testament, it made sense to accept God's offer of forgiveness and reconciliation and become a follower of Jesus Christ.

The Bible says how 'God has set eternity into our hearts' and that we were created in God's image  Our heart is restless until it finds its home and peace with the one who created all space, time, matter energy and life. Through Jesus - the Messiah (foretold thousands of years beforehand) we can find peace, new life and purpose 'My peace I leave with you - My peace I give you.'

So in answer to my earlier question. 'how can we paint anything of spiritual value'? The answer for me is my art is offered to the living God as an expression of worship.

I truly hope your heart finds its home with our creator God - may He bless your heart with His peace.
